William Faulkner and Billie Holiday

William Faulkner in interview with the London Sunday Times regards Artherine Lucy’s controversial admission to the University of Alabama:
“As long as there is a middle road, all right, I’ll be on it. But if it came to fighting, I’d fight for Mississippi against the United States even if it meant going out in the street and shooting Negroes.”

“Billy” Holiday? Any relation to Billie? I mean, ol’ Billy Faulkner used to piss of his back porch (“Count No-Count” they used to call him), guessing that the quote above is not from his Nobel acceptance speech….

Now THAT’s a fruit for the crows to pluck.

From Burroughs, on dealing w/ addiction: “Billie Holiday said that she knew she was cured when she stopped looking at T.V.”

    Alas,

Aha. Snit pickers in glass houses, or something.

To paraphrase LBJ, better to be pissed of than pissed on. Clearly I had my teacher cap on, and someone (naming no names) had put some Benzedrine in my Ovaltine. (Or, perhaps, as some students would render it, ON my Ovaltine….)
